Hallway Flooring Ideas

As the room that you’re greeted with upon entering your home, the hallway should provide a beautifully warm welcome for you and your guests – and you shouldn’t be afraid to use it to showcase your own personal style. After all, first impressions are everything! Here are a few fabulous hallway flooring ideas to get you started.

Hallways are the most well trodden path in any home, so regardless of whether you have a small hallway or a large vestibule that doubles as a separate room in it’s own right, it is worthwhile taking your time to consider your flooring options. It makes sense to go for something hardwearing, that is easy to clean and maintain and will stand the test of time no matter how many times you change the decor, so if you are looking for inspiration here are some of our best hallway flooring ideas.

First of all consider the age and style of your property. Traditional materials such as wood and tiles are ideal choices for a period home, while polished concrete or painted floors are better suited to more contemporary properties. Flagstones and old bricks look lovely in quaint country cottages, but for a more upmarket elegant feel a black and white chequerboard tile design is the perfect choice in a classic townhouse.

The colour of your choice of flooring is also important dependant on the size of your hallway. Dark polished wooden floors or deep red terracotta tiles will make a small hall appear smaller, while stripped lighter wood or neutral coloured tiles will help to enhance the feeling of space when combined with a white or cream decorating scheme.

Bear in mind that there are lots of different materials to choose from, so if you have set your heart on a wooden floor but need something that is easier to keep clean there are porcelain tiles available that mimic the effect of wooden planks in a variety of colours and finishes.

Polished wood flooring

Classic black and white chequered floors will never go out of style. This look works incredibly well in all sizes of hallway, from narrow rooms to large entrance halls, like this French-inspired hallway with chaise longue.

Pale parquet flooring

Develop a Scandinavian feel in your hall – complement light, airy spaces with pale blond parquet flooring. Slightly more unusual than floorboards, a parquet floor looks refreshingly modern in a clean, white room.
